 The country preparation towards the agreement revolves round five main elements, namely:

  • Definition of legal timber is the standard against which legal compliance will be measured
  • System of verification of legality including the proposed licensing scheme
  • Chain of custody system as reflected in the VLTP/SGS proposal on the woodtracking system
  • Independent monitoring of the legality assurance system (LAS),
  • Mitigation of possible impacts of the VPA including options for ensuring legal timber supply on the domestic market.
  • Domestic Market, efforts are been made to meet the high demand for wood locally as an attempt to curb the activities of illegal logging operations
  • Restructuring the Timber Industry to address the potential impacts of the VPA
